Alison Saar, Is You Is or Is You Ain’t, 2017. Intaglio, hand painted shellac. 13 x 9 in, edition of 50. $1,250.

Alison Saar’s work has long been dedicated to depicting a range of experiences related to racism, sexism, and ageism. Her portraits and figurative works provide provocative views of historical injustices that continue to strain our present-day social and cultural landscape. In her sculptures, drawings, and prints, she uses the figure to discuss the body as a point for identity formation. Often borrowing from mythology and her personal biography, the subjects of Saar’s work are pictured at points of self-revelation, growth, defiance, and perseverance.

Alison Saar carefully considers the physicality, conceptuality, and the history of the materials she chooses to work with. For this piece, Saar chose a flecked Chiri kozo paper. After the portrait was printed, the paper was treated with coats of shellac to achieve a stained quality. During the process of creating this print, Alison Saar said, “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t is about being racially ambiguous and gender fluid, so I was thinking of the paper being skin-like and translucent as an important component of the piece.”

Alison Saar created this piece for the 2017 season of our collectors program, Partners in Prints. We had a few remaining spots available in the program at the close of the year which allows us to offer a few of these special prints at the retail price of $1,250.
