Katherine Bradford, a lyrical abstractionist painter, began her
career in Maine before moving to New York. She has stated that she was
influenced heavily by minimalism in the seventies and that a lot of her
work relates to Jasper Johns.
She first began looking at the landscape,
but saw it in a very abstract way. She was inspired to paint simple
geometric elements: circles, grids, squares, and symbols although she
does not align herself with geometric art.
She recognizes connections
with primitive art and the use of language, and abstract expressionism's
importance of gesture in the application of paint. Her work is
contemplative, and represents a world of the spiritual and the senses.
