Sondra Freckelton was primarily a sculptor until the mid-1970's,
when she "fell in love with watercolor" and began painting everyday
objects combined with flowers and other plant life. Focusing on the
interplay and tensions created between two- and three-dimensional
patterns, Freckelton became a major figure in the 1970's movement towards
a "new realism." She studied both art and horticulture at the School of
the Art Institute and the University of Chicago.
Her work has been
included in numerous exhibitions and publications dealing with contemporary
American realism, still life and watercolor painting. At Tandem,
Freckelton created three pochoir prints. Pochoir is a French term
for "stencil" and as the name implies, the prints are created from
a series of stencils, one for each color. The pigment is applied
with a brush through stencil, building up the final print with
overlapping applications of transparent colors.
