The artist, novelist, critic, medical doctor, photographer, and performance
artist was born Brian O'Doherty in Ballaghaderrin, Ireland. In 1972,
horrified by Bloody Sunday, O'Doherty changed his name to Patrick Ireland
and vowed not to change it back until the British troops left Northern
Ireland.
In his art, Patrick Ireland has addressed issues of politics,
experimental psychology and personal identity. Beginning in the 1950's
he created sculpture, drawings, paintings, and documentary material that
encouraged the viewer's intellectual participation.
At Tandem Press, Ireland
continued to explore the theme of boundaries expressed by lines, spacial play,
and geometry. These prints recall the rope drawing installations he has
executed in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe.
