Mickalene Thomas (b. 1971), born in Camden, NJ, earned a BFA at Pratt Institute and an MFA at Yale as she pursued a lifelong informal study of art history. Thomas’s artworks brim with color, line, patterns, and multimedia elements, often highlighting vivid environments as still lifes, or female figures with poses and personalities that challenge, welcome, or look past the viewer. In addition to her numerous paintings, prints, and photographs, she also creates sculptures, enacts performances, curates exhibitions, delivers lectures, participates in residencies, and is featured in publications and catalogues worldwide. Thomas lives and works in Brooklyn, and she is represented by Lehmann Maupin in New York City, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, and Galerie Nathalie Obadia in Paris, and her numerous solo and group exhibitions expand even further. Her works have been included in prestigious public and private collections across New York City (such as those of the Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art), as well as nationally and internationally.
